About Faculty

The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies continues in the long tradition of graduating qualified students since the 1997-1998 academic year. Prior to its establishment as a Faculty in 1997 (with the three departments of Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising and Radio, TV and Film), the infrastructure was laid by the Department of Communication and Media Studies whish was established in 1994 under the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The fourth department of Visual Art and Visual Communication Design began enrolling students in the 2005-2006 academic year. Until the 2010-11 academic year, the language of instruction in the faculty was English. In 2011-2012, the Departments of Journalism and Radio, TV and Film added a program with Turkish as the language of instruction, followed in the 2012-2013 academic year bythe Department of Public Relations and Advertising. The English lanugage Journalism program froze student enrolment at the beginning of the 2012-2013 acedemic year.The undergraduate programs had 2293 graduates through 2013.Currently in 2013-2014 the combined total of student enrollment from seven academic programs (four English and three Turkish Language programs) is 540.

The Master (with thesis) and Doctoral programs under the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies have awarded graduate degrees since 1998. As of the 2013 academic year there have been 87 graduating students. The program has been ranked in the top 200 Best Master Programs Worldwide in Eduniversal Master Ranking since 2011. The Doctoral program which began accepting students in the 2001 academic year has graduated 11 PhD gradutes through 2013. Those graduates continue their academic life as instructors in a variety of universities around the world.

The Faculty also has two non-thesis MA programs – one in Visual Art and Visual Communication Design and the other in Radio-TV-Film Studies. The VACD program began enrolling students in the 2010-2011 academic year, graduating 30 students by 2013. Radio-TV-Film began offered Digital Media and Film studies at the MA level beginning with the 2013-2014 spring semester.

In addition to 19 full-time Faculty consisting of 1 professor, 7 Associate Professors, 9 Assistant Professors and 2 instructors, there are also 19 part-time faculty, making a total of 38 in all.

Our aim is to develop and successfully graduate students, who have the required qualities for a global and national communication environment; students who can comfortably use the new technologies available individually or cooperatively in a creative manner; students who execute their industrial knowledge as critical thinkers with ethical and social responsibility. By doing so, our students will be well prepared for professional life, be able to adapt to industry requirements of technological advancement as well as be creative and critical thinkers operating ethically as defenders of freedom of speech.

The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies houses Public Relations and Advertising; Journalism; Radio-Television and Film Studies and Visual Arts and Visual Communication . The Faculty is comprised of a multinational mix of academics and students, providing the students with a unique environment of multiculturalism and multilingualism. In addition to the respective department course requirements, students can take elective and common courses to realize a multidimensional approach to Communication studies. Our Faculty features a Media Center and Genesis IMC Agency which is run within the Public Relations and Advertising Project Center. We also boast an in-house media EMU-TV, Radio EMU, Gundem Newspaper and GundemNet – currently on air and in publication. These facilities provide students with professional and creative industrial experience. Furthermore, the Faculty offers Masters and PhD programs where students can develop their academic careers.
