The opening address of the conference entitled “Looking Back 25 Years Later: The End of Cold War” was delivered by Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen, who introducted the guest speaker of the conference Victor Marsh.

Victor Marsh held a Bachelor degree in international relations from Stanford University, conferred with honors in international security studies and a Masters of Public Affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School for Public and International Affairs, Pricenton University. In 2007, he joined the Foreign Service. He completed his first assignment as a Consular Officer in Hong Kong in February 2010. Then, he worked as a Watch Officer at the Secretary of State’s 24-hour crisis management and communications center in Washington. He is the member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers Community. At present, Marsh works as a Deputy Head of the Political Section at the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia. He speaks fluent Turkish, intermediate Mandarin Chinese and some Cantonese.

During the conference, Marsh spoke about these three aspects of the Cold War. First, he analyzed strategies which had been pursued by leaders in the past and made references to their leadership styles which were effective in the decision making processes, before finally outlining the technological developments that took place during the Cold War.

The conference on cold war delivered by Victor Marsh gave the audience a way to rethink the Cold War period. At the end of his talk, March stated that currently, there is no clear ideological confrontation between the West and the East, but still the dynamics of the Cold War should be discussed.
