2nd International Conference on Banking and Finance Perspectives Takes place at EMU

Organized by Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Business and Economics, Banking and Finance Department a conference titled “2nd International Conference on Banking and Finance Perspectives” commenced on Friday, the 21 April 2017 at Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center.

Nesrin Özataç

In her address, Conference Organizing Board and EMU Banking and Finance Department Chair Assoc. Dr. Nesrin Özataç stated that their aim is to create a platform to discuss the current issues of banking and finance and to contribute to the countrywide academic studies in this field. Assoc. Dr. Özataç noted that the topics of global finance, post crisis banking, the recent researches on banking and finance will be discussed during the conference, as well as the opportunities and risks in global financial markets. At the end of her speech, Assoc. Dr. Özataç thanked all who contributed to the project wishing the participants a productive conference.

Mehmet Emin Özcan

In a speech of his own, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Central Bank Governor Mehmet Emin Özcan thanked EMU for organizing such an event underlining that the TRNC is taking firm steps towards becoming an island of education. Touching upon the importance of researches as well as the education, Özcan highlighted that a healthy and steady economic structure can only be obtained by having good financial adjustments.

Necdet Osam

Speaking at the opening of the conference, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Osam thanked everyone who participated in the organization. Stating that EMU is an institution that has been taking firm steps forward since its establishment, Prof. Dr. Osam indicated that EMU is an institution of higher education that always values quality. Prof. Dr. Osam explained that EMU’s achievements are the best evidence of its quality stating that it is the first and only university from the TRNC to feature on the Times Higher Education List. Prof. Dr. Osam also indicated that EMU is the first Turkish Cypriot university to feature amongst the top 151-200 universities in the Young Universities Under 50 Years List. Prof. Dr. Osam concluded by wishing everyone a fruitful conference after noting that many individuals in TRNC’s banking sector are EMU graduates.

Sunat Atun

During his speech at the opening, TRNC Ministry of Economy and Energy Sunat Atun expressed his happiness regarding being at the said conference stating that he would like to read the final declaration that will emerge at the end of the conference.  Stating that conversations on Economics and Finance must be rational Atun, evaluated financial sources in previous years.

After the opening speeches, Prof. Dr. Osam handed those contributed in the event plaques of appreciation. The conference continued with Prof. Dr. Paresh Narayan’s presentation “The Past, Present and Future Tendencies of Islamic Banking”.  Following Prof. Dr. Narayan’s presentation a panel moderated by EMU Banking and Finance Department academic staff member Prof. Dr Mustafa Besim took place. During the “Turkish Cypriot Banking Dynamics” themed panel TRNC Central Bank Auditing and Supervision Manager (a.) Çağan Tanoğlu, Banking Association General Secretary Halil Okur and Asbank Board of Directors Chair Taştan Altuner held presentations respectively titled “A look at the TRNC Central Bank and Banking Sector”, “Vision and Expectations of the Turkish Cypriot Banking” and “Non-performing Loans and Their Solution Process”

Present at the said conference were Famagusta District Governor Dürdane Acı, Famagusta Mayor İsmail Arter, EMU Board of Trustees Member Recai Ergün, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Özkaramanlı, Prof. Dr. Sevin Uğural and Prof. Dr. Özgür Eren.
