EMU Academic Staff Member Prof. Dr. Gülümser Kubilay’s Statement on "Health and Smoking"

"The Likelihood of Smoking is 7 Times Greater for Children Whose Parents Smoke"

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Health Sciences Faculty, Department of Nursing Academic Staff Member Prof. Dr. Gülümser Kubilay released a 9th of February “World Cigarette Boycott Day” statement. Starting her statement with the sentence “Smoking is a very serious public health problem”, Prof. Dr. Kubilay emphasized that smoking in public spaces significantly effects non-smoker too.

Prof. Dr. Kubilay stated that every level of smoking is harmful as cigarettes contain thousands of chemicals that harm our bodies whilst also leading to addiction.

Noting that smoking leads to the death of 4.9 million people each year, Prof. Dr. Kubilay pointed out that smoking is held responsible for 90% of chronic diseases and 85% of lung cancer cases. It was also highlighted that smoking during pregnancy increases the chances of low birth weight.  Prof. Dr. Kubilay also indicated that the likelihood of smoking is 7 times greater for children whose parents smoke.

Prof. Dr. Kubilay stated that every 8 seconds someone dies as a result of smoking: “In the light of all of this information ask yourself the question ‘Do I want to quit smoking?’ Don’t forget that being determined is half the battle.” Prof. Dr. Kubilay concluded by stating her wish that everyone who smokes can quit on the 9th of February “World Cigarette Boycott Day”
