EMU Delivers Help to SOMA

Eastern Mediterranean University Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Hıfsiye Pulhan, Rector’s Office Coordinator Mutlu Kale and Student Council Chair İbrahim Öztürk paid a visit to Soma District in Manisa to deliver the donation raised within EMU to Soma Miners Cheetos Child Development Center, which offers free education to children whose families were affected by the Soma Disaster.

As it is known to all, due to ‘Soma Mining Disaster’ which took place on 13 May 2014, Eastern Mediterranean University cancelled all activities taking place within the framework of the “Spring Festival” and an aid campaign for the families affected by the disaster was launched. As a starting point in the aid campaign, the entire budget of the cancelled Spring Festival, excluding compulsory payments, was donated to Soma by EMU administration. Funds raised during the aid campaign were delivered to relevant authorities in Soma by EMU Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Pulhan, Coordinator Kale and Student Council Chair Öztürk.

Prof. Dr. Pulhan, Kale and Öztürk visited Soma District Governorship Office and had a chance to meet with Soma District Governor (acting) and Kırkağaç District Governor Ali Sırmalı, and National Education Director and Soma Miners Cheetos Child Development Center Representative. Providing detailed information on the aid campaign that has been going on since the disaster,  Prof. Dr. Pulhan stated that as representatives of Eastern Mediterranean University, they are there to provide relief to the families affected by the disaster. While presenting the collected donations to Soma Disrict Governor Sırmalı, Prof. Dr. Pulhan added that they hope that no disasters as such happen again.

Prior to their visit to district governor’s office, Prof. Dr. Pulhan, Kale and Öztürk visited Soma Miners Cheetos Child Development Center as well as the cemetery.
