EMU Pharmacy Faculty Gains the Accreditation of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria-PCN

The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) paid a visit to Eastern Mediterranean University on 11 July 2016 with the purpose of inspecting and accrediting EMU Faculty of Pharmacy and, at the same time, establishing collaborations between EMU and Nigerian educational institutions and pharmacy sector. Among notable names who visited EMU were Nigerian Pharmacists Council Chair Mohammed N. A. Elijah, Council Education and Internship Department Chair Dr. Idoko Anthony Sule, Nigeria Maiduguri University Pharmacy Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Isa Hussaini and Nigeria Abuja Federal Health Ministry representative Zainab Ujuud Shariff.

The said group of officials first paid a visit to Eastern Mediterranean University Rector Prof. Dr. Osam and then carried out inspections on EMU Pharmacy Faculty and the university campus. Within the framework of the two-day inspection and evaluation process, Faculty Dean and academic staff members provided information to the visiting group regarding the activities and education quality of the faculty, laboratories, accommodation and catering services provided for students, institutional structure, university and state support, sustainable quality and financial structure and international status of the faculty. The visiting group of officials also met Nigerian students and received their views and questions.

Following the inspection process, a press conference took place at EMU Pharmacy Faculty on 13 July 2016 with the participation of the Nigerian officials, EMU Vice Rector for Promotion and International Affairs Prof. Dr. Hasan Amca, Dean of EMU Pharmacy Faculty Prof. Dr. Fethi Şahin and faculty academic staff members.

During the press conference, Chair of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria Mohammed N. A. Elijah provided information about the report they prepared based on their observations and added that as the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, they grant accreditation to EMU Pharmacy Faculty. Elijah also provided information about the Council. At the end of his speech, Elijah thanked EMU Rector’s Office as well as EMU Faculty of Pharmacy for their sensitivity and cooperation.

Following Elijah, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Amca provided information about the accreditation process. Highlighting the fact that EMU hosts around 60,000 students from 106 different countries, Prof. Dr. Amca stressed the importance of accreditation and Quality Assurance System for EMU. Conveying his pleasure in receiving the accreditation of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, Prof. Dr. Hasan Amca extended his appreciation to the Dean of Pharmacy Faculty Prof. Dr. Fethi Şahin and all faculty members for their support and cooperation during the accreditation process.

Dean of EMU Pharmacy Faculty Prof. Dr. Fethi Şahin thanked the visiting officials for their support and added that EMU Pharmacy Faculty is the first and best pharmacy faculty throughout the island. Prof. Dr. Şahin also added that their short term mission is to become the best faculty of pharmacy in the Middle East region. Finally, Prof. Dr. Şahin put forth that the application process for the opening of the doctoral degree program  in their faculty is now complete and that the faculty is awaiting the Turkish Higher Education Council’s approval.
