Local Tourism, Famagusta and City Awareness Discussed in “The Notebook of Tourism” Program

Taking place under the moderatorship of Tourism Faculty Vice Dean Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç, this week’s The Notebook of Tourism Program hosted Resmiye Eroğlu Canaltay, Chair of the Ancient Famagusta Foundation.

Canaltay started the program by talking about the establishment of the Antique Famagusta Foundation. As a tourism representative, Canaltay stated that our country’s tourism is marketed under the title of “North Cyprus” at international fairs. Canaltay added that the city of Famagusta was first perceived as a port and then as a university city. According to Canaltay, it’s time for the city to be mentioned as an ‘antique city’. Stating that the Antique Famagusta Foundation was established with the purpose of raising an awareness on the antique aspect of the city, Canaltay added that during the previous years, they opened a stand at an international fair with the slogan of “Antique Famagusta Winking at You”.

Canaltay also put forth that through simple organisations within the city, historical artefacts, culture, and arts may be highlighted. During the program, Canaltay also talked about the situation of tourism and hotels within Famagusta. Canaltay stated that new touristic facilities need to start operating in the region along with 5-star hotels. During her final remarks, Canaltay talked about their intitiation in converting Bandabulya to a city museum.
