Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Department of Cinema and Television will be offering all faculties English and Turkish language minor programs as of the 2017-2018 Academic Year Spring Semester.

Students who want to participate in a minor program  at EMU Department of Cinema and Television need to have completed their first 2 terms in their major program with a grade average (CGPA) of at least 2,50. They will be able to obtain their minor program certificates after completing a total of 6 courses at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.

Applications can be made by filling out a form at the EMU Faculty of Communication and Media Studies Faculty secretariat. Each term a minimum of 1 and maximum of 2 minor program courses can be taken. If the CGPA of a student is 3 or above, one extra course he or she gained the right to take will be of no extra charge if selected from the minor program.

In his statement, Vice Chair of the EMU Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Department of Cinema and Television Ahmet Goran highlighted that 6 courses of the minor program are also courses on the major program and that if students who complete the minor program want to go on to postgraduate level study, they will be exempt from these 6 courses.

The Minor Program Content is Rich both Practically and Theoretically

Indicating that the content of the minor program is rich both practically and theoretically Goran also drew attention its diversity. Students will learn how to use a camera in the course “Introduction to Film and TV Production”, montage in the course “Introduction to Editing”, and extensive information about cinematography in the course “Director of Photography”. Goran also stated that student knowledge will be developed in theoretical courses such as “Key Concepts and Movements in Cinema”, “Understanding Telecast Media and Policies”, and “Film Aesthetics”.

“TV and Cinema are 2 Very Important Media Tools in the Center of Our Lives”

Stating that receiving education at the Department of Cinema and Television will add important vision to students Goran noted: “Today TV and Cinema are 2 very important media tools in the center of our lives. Therefore gaining practical skills and theoretical knowledge will develop the vision of our students. When watching a film or television they will be able to take a more critical stance and no longer be a passive member of the audience. Therefore their enjoyment of cinema and television will be increased. Of course this is just at the surface level if we are to go one step further students will have the courage to be able try out what they have learned (such as producing a short film) after obtaining certain skills on the program. If they have a written a script they will be able to convert it to a film and in the future they might even find job opportunities in this field.

“People Have Started to Share Their Own Videos and Short Films on Social Media”

Inviting students of all faculties to be a part of the Department of Cinema and Television minor program, Goran drew attention to the fact that people in all fields are now active on social media where they have started to make productions.

Stating that students obtaining the learning outcomes of the Department of Cinema and Television on their own will be very difficult and time consuming Goran noted: “Today, people have started to share their own videos and short films via the internet on social media. We provide the opportunity for our students from all faculties to learn about production in a short amount of time, under the counseling of expert academic personnel.”

Finally, Goran added that the grade average of students in the minor program will not affect the grade average of their major program.
