TRNC Becomes Champion in Women’s Category and Nigeria in Men’s Category

Organised by Eastern Mediterranean University, Sports Affairs Directorate, “EMU Futsal Tournament was completed with final matches and an award ceremony which took place at  Lala Mustafa Paşa Sports Center on Wednesday, 19 April 2017.

In the final matches, in men’s category, Nigeria gained victory against Palestine with a score 12-11. As per the women’s category, TRNC defeated Nigeria with a score 1-0. Palestine came second in men’s category and Nigeria came second in women’s category in the tournament. During the matches for the third place, Turkey gained victory against Iran in men’s category and Iran defeated Cameroon.

Following the matches, an award ceremony where the winning teams were presented cups and medals took place. Cups and medals were awarded to the winning teams by EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam, Vice Rector for Financial Affairs Prof. Dr. Sevin Uğural, Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. M. Yaşar Özden, Rector’s Coordinator Assist. Prof. Dr. Arif Akkeleş, Student Affairs Coordinators Assoc. Prof. Dr. Derviş Subaşı and Assist. Prof. Dr. Mutlu Kale and Sports Affairs Director Cemal Konnolu.

During the award ceremony, the Most Gentlemanly Player Awards were presented to Favour Ezinne Ogwuegbu and Roy Alhawawini, the Best Trainer Awards were given to Gizem Yahat and Ibrahim Ahmad Musa, the Best Goalkeeper Award to Damla Lisaniler and Ihsan Salem, the Goal Queen Award to Niknaz Badrinezhad, the Goal King award to Alireza Zarrin, the Most Valuable Player Award to Tahmina Suleymanzaqde and Rafael Ndubuisi.

In the tournament which commenced on 22 March 2017, a total of 30 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams from different countries competed against each other. The group matches took place between 22 March and 5 April and quarter finals and semi-finals took place on 6 April 2017.

EMU Lala Mustafa Paşa Sports Complex hosted the matches in six men’s and two women’s groups. The semifinalists were determined after a cross match-up between quarterfinalists which consisted of the first two leading teams in each men’s group. The losing teams in the semifinals will compete for third place whilst the winning teams will compete in the finals. In the women’s competition, the first two teams in each group proceeded directly to the semifinals after cross match ups. The winners of the semifinals will play in the final and the losing teams will compete for third place.
