EMU Faculty of Education, Department of Elementary Education Organised a Conference on “Earthquakes and Natural Disaster Management”

An informative conference on “Earthquakes and Natural Disaster Management” was held at the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Education, Department of Elementary Education. Academicians and students attended the conference given by academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Süha Kocakuşak. The conference attracted an audience with demonstrated great interest towards the topic.

The opening speech of the conference was delivered by the Head of the Department of Elementary Education, Prof. Dr. Ayşe Işık Gürşimşek. During her speech, Prof. Dr. Gürşimşek drew attention to the necessity of informing and raising awareness of the students studying in the programs of Pre-School Teaching and Elementary School Teaching about “Disasters and Management”. Pointing out the importance of coping with the effects of disasters in terms of developing protective and preventive educational interventions, Prof. Dr. Gürşimşek emphasized that the formation at this point is of critical importance in today's conditions.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Kocakuşak discussed the causes of natural disasters in general and earthquakes in particular, and the prevention of damage caused by such disasters. Sharing data-based scientific explanations, theoretical knowledge and applications with visual examples from the perspective of geology and education, Assist. Prof. Dr. Kocakuşak also drew attention to the necessity and importance of investing in the development of future teachers by creating disaster awareness with early education when they take part in the education system.

At the end of the conference, EMU Education Faculty, Elementary Education Department Head Prof. Dr. Ayşe Işık Gürşimşek presented Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Süha Kocakuşak with flowers and a certificate of appreciation.
