Faculty of Medicine

Eastern Mediterranean University Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty started providing medical degree at the beginning of the 2012-2013 Academic Year.

Our vision is to adopt the approach for the most up to date educational standards and continuous learning in delivering medical education at the highest standards which will always be based on the principles of evidence based medicine, research and a student centred approach. We see our future as a strong faculty with a robust identity and culture, delivering high standards in medicine, gaining acknowledgement locally and internationally for our high standards and attracting students and teaching staff of highest abilities.

Our purpose is to train highly qualified doctors setting examples with their strong commitment for good medical practices as well as their understanding of global and local health issues, problem solution skills for public health issues, commitment in following the latest developments in medicine, contributions to the advancement of the medicine as a science by adopting the latest technology to every day practices and their highest ethical and analytical standards.

The faculty boasts an educational environment shaped in accordance with the requirements of the student-centered education, research and training labs equipped with latest technological features, an anatomy laboratory equipped with advanced individual 3D viewing technology supported with cadaveric material, dissection tables and models identical to each human organ. The faculty also hosts student recreational facilities such as computer and reading rooms as well as a cafeteria.

The duration of the Medicine Degree Program is for 6 years. The program is a joint degree program provided by Eastern Mediterranean University Medicine Faculty and UTEAK (National Medicine Education Accreditation Board) accredited Marmara University Medicine Faculty.

The programme is in English Language and foreign students are required to take Turkish courses in order to learn adequate Turkish to communicate with patients in hospitals. During the first three years of core preclinical training, the curriculum encompasses student-centered training in basic sciences, ethics, application of evidence based medicine principles, development of professional skills as well as special study modules on human sciences, behavioral science, philosophy, natural science, social sciences, communication skills, arts and IT classes of their choice. During the fourth and fifth years, students are provided with applied practices such as the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. During their final year, students take an active role in patient care under the supervision of their instructors. Students may also benefit from one of the elective courses on “family medicine”.

Within the framework of the “Introduction to Clinical Skills” delivered during the first three years of the program, students benefit from multidisciplinary research opportunities, carry out research and statistical analysis and at the end of their research are given the opportunity to present their scientific studies in MASCO, the international student congress organised by Marmara University. Last but not least, the students develop basic medical skills useful for lifetime through practical classes in the Introduction to Clinical Skills programme.

PBL (Problem Based Learning) is a student and problem centred teaching model that holds a constructive teaching approach. It is a new method for participative learning where students have the chance to improve theoretical knowledge, communication and problem solving skills necessary for professional medical careers. In this model, a problem focused scenario is taken as the basis and learning is facilitated via group dynamics among students. In Problem Based Learning, students and tutors have to approach problems with successful methodology, work in groups and adapt to group dynamics. The success of the development process depends on students and teachers acting along the defined roles as group members, discussion leaders and note takers. The skills acquired during the modules are a fundamental part of the learning process. This process enables the students and the teachers to critically evaluate how they participate individually and as team leaders/members.

Our graduates are General Practitioners with medicine degree which allows them to carry out their profession internationally. The graduates are also able to continue their field of specialisation or become researchers with doctorate programmes.
